This goal of this research was use advanced computing to investigate a particular method for making stylistic attributions of old master paintings that was developed by Giovanni Morelli in the late nineteenth century. The "Morelli Machine" refers to an algorithmic approach based on analyzing fine details and style of minor items. However, the notion of "style" has been constructed and reconstructed over the century and a half since Morelli began publishing his findings. Instead, we asked what could computers contribute/reveal about a humanistic method that is fully determined, but that is also so clearly aligned with computation. In addition, given the recent interest and success in deep convolution network we wanted to explore what features are present in these networks that have some discriminatory power for distinguishing paintings.
